Ensure that your new home is equipped for a multitude of communication types, such as voice, high-speed Internet, computer networks and broadband television.

Below you will find information on Silver Star's Certified Home Program, Planning your New Home, Recommended Wiring Materials, and Fiber to the Home developments.

Silver Star technicians are trained and certified to wire your home's communication centers. When one of our technicians wires your home, you qualify for a ten-year limited warranty on repairs to your inside wiring.*

We are also working with local contractors to standardize wiring practices through training and certification. In the past, homes were wired using a "daisy chain" method. While this practice was acceptable several years ago, it does not accommodate today's technology, mainly broadband Internet and network services. When a certified contractor wires your new home, you are eligible for a five-year limited warranty on repairs to inside wiring once the home passes a Silver Star inspection.

Ask your builder to utilize a Silver Star certified wiring technician, or contact us for your wiring needs.

*Your home must be built in our service territory, and you must subscribe to our phone or broadband services.

When designing your new home it is important to prepare for the various service providers that will be installing electronic and broadband products in your home. We recommend designating a small, heated room suitable for electronics as your equipment room. Placing your media panel in this equipment room provides a central location for all of your wiring.

The following guidelines will ensure that you have the inside wiring structure necessary for quality communications services.

Strategically plan the locations for telephones, televisions, faxes and computers before your walls are finished; the cost of Cat5e is minimal compared to installing wire later. Recommended locations: home offices, entertainment centers, bedrooms, night stands, computer areas, kitchen walls, counters, bars and living area.

Fiber to the Home is available in many new developments throughout our serving area. Fiber to the Home creates a tech-ready home prepared for high-speed Internet access, video and voice services, thus increasing your property value. As broadband services continue to advance and require more bandwidth, Fiber to the Home properties will be equipped to handle these advanced services.

Developments with fiber to the home need an Uninterruptible Power Supply and an Optical Network Terminal. In most cases, Silver Star will supply these two components. The Optical Network Terminal (ONT) provides multiple telephone line connections and an Ethernet Data port. This device, designed to mount on the exterior siding of the home, will be positioned within 6 feet of the power meter. The UPS will be connected to the ONT through a low voltage cable. Both of these devices may be mounted in a weather rated (NEMA 2R) enclosure on the exterior of the home. The structure should be 30”H 20”W 9”D and accessible to the ground by at least a 2” conduit.
